Longer than Kilimanjaro has existed, people have been living in this region. The mountain gained worldwide recognition and fame through its popularization by Hemingway and Hollywood. This largest free-standing mountain in the world is usually known on the basis of a picture showing only one section: snow-covered Kibo. By contrast, this book, which is the result of a climbing expedition, aims at showing different views in its abundant pictorial material (also useful as preparation for a climb), illustrating the settlement and the cultural achievements, the mythology, the language of the first climbers, the modern developments in the region, the languages and names of the landscapes, the education, food, as well as the social consequences of the climbing and the reception of Kilimanjaro in the sciences and arts.
