<< The Way Cultures Get in Touch

Cultures in contact through international programs of the EU

Lenka Kucirkova (Czech University of Agriculture, Prague)

ABSTRACT:

We live in a world where cultures are increasingly coming into contact with one another. The culture in which each of us lives influences and shapes our feelings, attitudes, and responses to our experiences and interactions with others. Our culture teaches us how to interpret the world, because of our culture, we have knowledge, beliefs, values, views and behaviors that we share with others with the same cultural heritage. Learning about cultural diversity provides students with knowledge and skills for more effective communication in intercultural situations. Culture and language are interrelated and language is the main medium through which culture is expressed. Every language takes sense in a certain context and culture belongs among the most important facets of context in which the language is used. The integration processes require intensive communication among single integrated wholes, their institutions, enterprises and individuals. The Czech University of Agriculture has been fully involved in the international cooperation of universities in students' and teachers' exchange programs of the European Union, particularly in the program of Socrates/Erasmus. The best students from our university get the chance to study at foreign partner universities and vice versa. Our Department of Languages provides the Czech language intensive course for beginners held in summer for the foreign students who will study in the Czech republic at various universities.
