ABSTRACT:

Recently, the increasing emergence of community-based organizations has been acknowledged as a survival strategy developed by citizens in response to failures of corrupt and alienated governments and misguided economic policies, particularly in the global south. This section focuses on the role played by community-based organizations in today’s global societies, and presentations would be invited to focus on one or more of the following issues:

  •   relationship between community-based organizations and other social groups
  •   relationship between community-based organizations and the state
  •   networking strategies of community-based organizations
  •   relevance of information technology for community-based organizations
  •   the role of local knowledge in community-based projects
  •   community-based organizations as democratic institutions
  •   the specific function/s of community-based organizations in specific contexts (Africa; Europe; United States; etc.)
