Teaching text in the light of globalisation and integration (with reference to Slovene and English)

The processes of cultural globalisation and European integration lead to new genres or kinds of texts being introduced into countries such as Slovenia, often through translation from English, as well as the increasing standardisation of existing genres, especially in the printed media. At the same time, the internationalisation of the popular media and of publishing result in the growing influence of a particular model of English on non-native learners and users of that language, which is often at odds with the model which is presented within the educational system. The author will address these issues in relation to both the teaching of English and the training of translators, calling for an increased emphasis on textual and rhetorical conventions across cultures.
