Cultural Technologies for Cultural Meta-Information: Creating federated
Virtual Reference Rooms for European Digital Knowledge Heritage Gerhard Budin
(Vienna)
Current meta-data initiatives are critically reviewed in their benefits
and limitations for web-based cultural technology applications. Digital
library/archive initiatives and XML-based standards development for syntactic
and semantic interoperability and web-based, automated reference
services are the starting points of a major EU-project that will be
presented in this paper: the creation of virtual reference rooms for accessing
heterogeneous cultural collections across Europe requires not only new
technologies (such as intelligent information agents) and new knowledge
organization schemes, but also a further development of cultural meta-data
sets compatible with generic meta-data sets. Scenarios for the Semantic
Web to develop into a Trans-cultural Web are discussed in the conclusions
part.
