Report: Re-telling the Past, Mapping the Future: Feminist Interventions across Times and Cultures

The workshop was conceived as an interdisciplinary forum with a focus on women in Central and South Eastern Europe and their (self-)representations. It literally turned into a journey spanning those two regions and shedding light on crucial periods in their varied histories with the feminist interventions of the title coming both from significant figures from the past and present and the participants themselves. "Transition" was a keyword, which recurred throughout the presentations and discussions, thus emphasizing the participants' awareness of the regions' liminality and their potential for change and development.

Most speakers engaged with topics such as the following:

• major phases in the history of women's movements in Europe with a special reference to Central and South Eastern Europe;
• women and issues of ethnic/cultural/political difference;
• (self-)representations of borderland cultures;
• emblematic images of masculinity and femininity in key political contexts;
• dominant approaches to culture and cultural difference and feminist contestations of essentialism and relativism;
• elaboration of anti-hegemonic strategies in the past and present.

The workshop encouraged an exchange of ideas and fruitful debate among scholars of different academic and national backgrounds. Participants represented all major areas in the humanities and arts: from literature through media studies to art history.
