1. About the Conference

Up to now attention has focused on multilingualism in terms of the preservation of languages for the purposes of education and of ruling nations, and often also as a means of carrying out government interests. At the beginning of the third millennium, however, tendencies toward transnational processes with new quality can be observed on and between continents and subcontinents. These structures occur in manifold forms (technological platforms, markets, artistic processes, government administrations, currencies, etc.), and these in turn necessitate new means of communication. Arts and Sciences, Humanities and especially Cultural Sciences are no longer the sole objects of these processes of change; as such they have lost some of their importance today.

Closely linked to multiculturalism, globalism, in order to succeed, needs to recognize these contexts with respect to the themes and changes evident in Europe as well as internationally. The goal of the Conference is, through questions and suggestions, to return language and culture to a central position as subject. Because of the close connection of science and politics, the essential position of language and its management in multilingual (polyglot) terms has come to be recognized as the presupposition of responsible globalization. As the expression of thinking and acting, language can initiate changes, adapt circumstances and situations to desired and chosen conditions and shape or transform structures in a meaningful way. In doing so, the central question is whether languages (or in more general terms: cultures) are divisive elements in transnational processes, or whether that which divides cultures results from their attachment to certain ideologies and religious teachings, which would mean that there is a danger of these difficulties continuing. Another central question is, which elements have had a transnational character for a longer time and which are relatively recent developments? And how well is the interaction between the many and varied languages and cultures functioning in international contexts and transnational processes in all professional fields?

The contributions to the conference will be published in TRANS, the Internet Journal of INST for Cultural Studies, in their original languages (French, German, English).
